ProjectX to Extract individual Digital TV Transport Streams

I stumbled upon this by accident. Previously, when I've wanted to record an individual HDTV stream for use elsewhere, I've been able to record the individual transport stream. However, an upgrade in some software I use caused me to capture an entire ATSC stream from a local digital channel. Not a problem, I was able to retain only the video and audio I needed, thanks again to ProjectX.

Keep in mind, there's no real reason to ever record an entire ATSC digital stream on purpose - unless the broadcaster is carrying two compelling shows of interest on separate subchannels. Doing this without cause will obviously cause your hard drive to fill up more quickly.

However, as I mentioned, in my scenario - this was purely accidental. I wanted to keep a recent episode of Saturday Night Live. However, when I imported the .ts (transport stream) file into ProjectX to remove commercials, I noticed I only saw the NBC WeatherPlus carried on another subchannel from my local NBC station.

I don't know why ProjectX chose to "work with" this subchannel by default. Apparently, this happened the week prior, but ProjectX just worked with the HDTV stream I wanted without me noticing. (The primary HDTV stream runs at 0x31 and 0x34, and the WeatherPlus stream runs at 0x41 and 0x44 for video and audio respectively. No changes from the station have taken place).

I knew that the my recording setup had captured the entire stream, I just needed to figure out how to get extract it out of the 11 Gigabyte file. Fortunately, ProjectX doesn't hide these settings that well!

As you can see above, I was able to specify which streams ProjectX was to deal with. I switched the mini-panel to the left of the preview window from "CutViews" to settings. If you accidentally input the wrong value, double-click to remove it.
